
About the Role
Informed Land Survey (ILS) is looking for a motivated and dependable entry-level Survey Chainman to join our field crew on a variety of projects across western Washington. This is a full-time, entry-level opportunity — no prior land surveying experience is required. We’re ready to train the right candidate who’s eager to build a long-term career in the surveying profession.
As a Chainman / Instrument Person / Survey Crew Member, you’ll work as part of a 2-person crew in a physically active, outdoor role across varied terrain and weather conditions year-round.
The ideal candidate brings a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn technical skills on the job.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities:
Working outdoors in all weather conditions
Hiking through brush, uneven terrain, and wooded areas
Clearing vegetation using hand tools (machete, loppers, etc.)
Setting up and operating survey instruments and tripods
Locating and marking survey monuments
Utilizing GPS and surveying equipment/software under supervision
Maintain adherence to safety standards and proper use of personal protective equipment
Travel to job sites and work in varying outdoor conditions
Must be available for occasional overtime as needed
Minimum Qualifications:
Physically capable of lifting and carrying up to 30 lbs.
High school diploma or GED
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
Ability to pass a background check and work on military installations
Basic computer or tech-savviness (we’ll train you on survey software)
Able to work independently and as part of a team
